TANKING-ZERO
Water Proofing Membrane
Product Description
StarFix TANKING-ZERO is a single component, liquid applied coating that is specially formulated to provide a water barrier on the concrete base of a raised access flooring installation. It cures to produce a flexible and elastomeric waterproofing membrane in light (green) to extra-heavy (blue) graded access flooring installations. StarFix TANKING-ZERO contains zero VOC’s, solvent, halogens or phthalates and is the first (and only) liquid applied, raised access flooring, tanking membrane to have its own LEED V4 and V4.1 attestation certificate, Indoor Air Comfort Gold A+ rating and a 25-year product warranty.

Attributes & Benefits
❶ Superior waterproofing properties
Impervious to moisture to protect sensitive areas e.g. data centres.
❷ Liquid applied, seamless application
Liquid application prevents failures resulting from jointing.
❸ Flexible, high elongation properties
Flexible formulation prevents cracking caused by substrate movement.
❹ Zero VOC content, solvent free, odourless formulation
For use in enclosed environments without affecting trades or occupants.
❺ Fully compatible with StarFix pedestal adhesives
Can used with the full range of StarFix adhesives, sealers & coatings.
Application Instructions
Unlike floor paints, StarFix TANKING-ZERO is a membrane coating, and a higher film thickness (dft) is therefore necessary to achieve the required elastomeric performance. The minimum membrane thickness should be 1.2mm (1.67 kg/m²) and this is achieved with the following considerations: -
● Typical applications consist of a single coat applied at a minimum depth of 1.2mm. This reduces the application time and labour costs; however, care must be taken to ensure a uniform film thickness and that the coated areas are not heavily trafficked after application.
● If the coated area is likely to be trafficked by other trades or building occupants prior to the raised access flooring panels closing off the coated areas, two coats at a minimum 0.6mm depth each (1.2mm total) will help prevent damage and pin holing however this will reduce the coverage rate and incur greater labour costs.
● If a second coat is to be applied, the application must take place within 48 hrs of the first coat to ensure good inter-coat adhesion.
StarFix TANKING-ZERO is supplied as either a 10kg unit in an 8-litre metal tin with a plug lid or as a 20kg unit in an 18-litre metal tin with a re-sealable, ring-latch closure lid. StarFix TANKING-ZERO does not require mixing or stirring however in cooler temperatures (<15°C) the product will be higher in viscosity and more difficult to apply whilst in warmer temperatures (>15°C) the product will be lower in viscosity and easier to apply. The ideal product temperature for application is 15°C. If the product temperature is greater than 20°C, then care should be taken to ensure the minimum application depth of 1.2mm is being achieved. This can be done by marking out the areas required for each tin:

When being applied as part of a raised access flooring system, StarFix TANKING-ZERO should only be used after the pedestals have been bonded to the base using a StarFix pedestal adhesive. StarFix TANKING-ZERO is typically applied by pouring the contents of the tin directly onto the application area and then spreading the material using a non-serrated squeegee or a short-pile roller.
Metal Backed Flashing
New metal backed flashing strip may have residual silicone on the surface. Wash with high flash aromatic solvent, allow to dry and abrade the surface before the application of StarFix TANKING-ZERO.
Flashing, valleys and upstands
StarFix TANKING-ZERO is self-flashing and can be used to create upstands on vertical surfaces. In such cases the angle between the vertical and horizontal surfaces will require two coats (1.8mm) of StarFix TANKING-ZERO.
1st Coat:
Concrete vertical wall - The horizontal coat must be applied to a minimum 1.2mm depth and continue to a minimum height of 100mm up the vertical surface.
Masonry vertical wall - The horizontal coat must be applied to a minimum 1.2mm depth and continue to a minimum height of 150mm up the vertical surface.
2nd Coat:
Concrete vertical wall - The second coat should be applied to a minimum 0.6mm depth and cover 100mm along both the horizontal surface and the vertical surface.
Masonry vertical wall - The second coat should be applied to a minimum 0.6mm depth and cover 150mm along both the horizontal surface and the vertical surface.

Raised access flooring pedestals
When being applied to a raised access flooring pedestal, two coats of StarFix TANKING-ZERO, at a combined depth of >1.8mm are required. It is important to ensure that the pedestal adhesive has received a minimum of 48 hours cure time prior to the application of a StarFix TANKING-ZERO coating.
1st Coat:
Steel Pedestal - The horizontal coat must be applied to a minimum 1.2mm depth and continue to a minimum height of 100mm up the pedestal.
2nd Coat:
Steel Pedestal - The second coat should be applied to a minimum 0.6mm depth and cover 100mm along both the horizontal surface and the vertical pedestal.

Expansion Joints & Live Cracks
When applying StarFix TANKING-ZERO over expansion joints or cracks it is important to clean the surrounding surfaces. Where the joint sealant or crack repair does not fill the void, pour StarFix TANKING-ZERO into the void until it is flush with the surface. Overcoat immediately, extending at least 25mm either side. Bolt heads should be given two coats of StarFix TANKING-ZERO before the general application.

Cure Time
The time taken to achieve full cure can be reduced in cold temperatures (<10°C) and dry air or increased in warm temperatures (>30°C) and humid air. These varied conditions will not affect the initial rate of cure (front-end cure), and the coating will remain in a workable state for approximately two hours. The following graph shows the cure profile of StarFix TANKING-ZERO tested according to ASTM D5895 (BK Drying recorder test).

Coverage Rates
To achieve the minimum application depth of 1.2mm, each square meter of floor will require of 1.67kg of StarFix TANKING-ZERO which is available in 10kg or 20kg units.
StarFix TANKING-ZERO 10.000kg unit: Total area=6m² Pedestals =25 600x600 Panels =17
StarFix TANKING-ZERO 20.000kg unit: Total area=12m² Pedestals =46 600x600 Panels =33
To ensure we are providing ‘real-world’ information, a small amount of loss has been built into the coverage rate calculations. To allow for vertical edging and pedestal coating we advise increasing any requirement calculations by 5%.
