Shelf-Life
The Shelf Life & Long-Term Storage of StarFix Adhesives
Every StarFix product is supplied with a recommended shelf life when stored in its original, unopened container under the storage conditions specified in the relevant Technical Data Sheet. These dates are shown in the table and are used to ensure customers always achieve the optimum product performance.
However, it is important to understand that a shelf life is not the same as an expiry date. In practice, StarFix products remain fully usable for many years beyond their stated shelf life, provided they have been stored correctly in unopened, undamaged containers. The recommended shelf life simply defines the period during which we can guarantee the product will perform exactly as specified without the need for further inspection.

Why Shelf Life Matters
Polyurethane-based construction adhesives are highly engineered chemical systems. Over time, all reactive materials slowly age, even inside sealed containers.
The quality of the formulation determines how well a product resists these natural ageing processes.
A well-formulated adhesive will remain stable for many years, while lower quality products can begin to deteriorate long before they are used.
StarFix - Superior In-Can Stability
One of the characteristics that sets the StarFix range apart is its exceptional in-can stability.
Our chemists carefully select high-quality raw materials and formulate each product to remain chemically stable during long-term storage. This means the adhesive retains the characteristics it was designed to deliver when it is eventually used on site.
Unfortunately, not all pedestal adhesives are formulated to the same standard.
Some lower-cost products begin to change as they age within the container. This gradual deterioration can affect important properties such as:
-
Viscosity and workability
-
Wetting and substrate adhesion
-
Cure speed
-
Bond strength
-
Overall installation consistency
These changes may not always be obvious to the installer, but they can reduce application quality and long-term performance. StarFix products are specifically engineered to resist these effects, providing outstanding storage stability and consistent performance whenever they are required.
What Happens Once the Container Has Been Opened?
Single-component polyurethane pedestal adhesives cure by reacting with moisture in the atmosphere. Once a container has been opened, the surface of the adhesive is exposed to humid air and, over time, it is perfectly normal for a thin cured skin to form across the top of the product.
This does not necessarily mean the entire container has cured.
In most cases:
-
The cured surface skin can simply be removed and discarded.
-
The liquid adhesive beneath remains unaffected.
-
The remaining material can continue to be used normally, provided it has not thickened significantly or become contaminated.
The rate at which a skin forms depends on storage conditions, particularly temperature, humidity and how frequently the container is opened.
Maximising Product Life
To achieve the longest possible storage life, we recommend:
-
Store products in their original sealed containers.
-
Keep containers in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures.
-
Replace lids immediately after use and ensure they are securely sealed.
-
Minimise the time containers are left open during installation.
Following these simple storage practices will help maximise product life and maintain optimum performance
Quality You Can Rely On
Every StarFix product is manufactured under our ISO 9001 quality management system using carefully selected raw materials and tightly controlled production processes. Combined with exceptional formulation stability, this gives installers confidence that each product will deliver the same reliable performance whether it is used immediately after manufacture or after an extended period of correct storage.
While the recommended shelf life shown in our Technical Data Sheets provides a conservative guide for guaranteed performance, the exceptional in-can stability of the StarFix range means that unopened products stored correctly will often remain perfectly serviceable well beyond their stated shelf life.
