SEALER
General Purpose Dust Suppressor
Product Description
StarFix SEALER is a single component, liquid applied, modified vinyl acetate for use on semi-porous concrete substrates found in access flooring installations. StarFix SEALER is specially formulated as a dust suppressant on the concrete base of a raised access flooring installation. StarFix SEALER is a water based, non-hazardous product and has the added benefits of being compatible with the full range of StarFix adhesives and coatings.

Attributes & Benefits
❶ Dust suppressant
Reduces moisture and dust on concrete subfloors.
❷ Highly pigmented
Available in red and yellow for defined coverage identification.
❸ Simple application
Can be applied easily with a brush or roller.
❹ High dilution ratio
Can be diluted with water at a 3:1 ratio for extended coverage.
❺ Fully compatible with StarFix pedestal adhesives
Can used with the full range of StarFix adhesives & coatings.
Dilution Rates
In most applications the product will be used directly from its container however when being used as a preventative dust suppressant on a highly porous surface, the sealer can be diluted up to a maximum ratio of one part sealer with four parts water.
Our own in-house testing has confirmed that products diluted at a higher ratio can fail and result in producing dust and hindering pedestal adhesion.
Application Instructions
StarFix SEALER is dust suppressant coating that is applied to the concrete subfloor. Porous, absorbent concrete acts like a sponge and diluting the sealer reduces its viscosity and allows it to sink deep into the concrete pores and bind the loose dust from within. Unnecessary dilution or over dilution of the sealer on a non-porous subfloor will produce a surface layer of sealer which can prevent the optimum adhesion level required between the subfloor and raised access flooring pedestals.
IMPORTANT: StarFix SEALER is not a concrete repair system and should only be used on a substrate that is structurally sound, clean, free from contaminants such as oil, grease and laitance and is at least eight weeks old. On surfaces with high levels of dusting, the use of StarFix SEAL-ZERO should be given consideration.
Most raised access flooring installations will not require the use of a sealer coat.
StarFix SEALER is only advised as either a porosity sealer on highly porous subfloors, a dust prevention measure on low to non-porous subfloors or as a dust suppression coating on dusty floors.
Dust prevention on a low porosity to non-porous subfloor.
For application of dust prevention on low or non-porous subfloors, a single coat (red) of un-diluted sealer will be required. The sealer should be poured directly from its container onto the concrete subfloor and spread using a low pile roller or soft brush. An average coverage rate of 400 m² to 500m² per 20 litre bottle should be expected.
Porous floor sealing:

Highly porous concrete
For applications on a highly porous subfloor, two coats (1st coat yellow & 2nd coat red) of 1:4 diluted sealer will be required. A 20-litre bottle of sealer should be mixed with 80 litres of water (4 litres of water for every 1 litre of sealer). Whilst diluting the product at 1:4 increases the amount of sealer from 20 litres to 100 litres, the porosity of the subfloor requires approximately five times more sealer and the average coverage rate will remain at 500m².
Semi-porous concrete
For applications on a semi-porous subfloor, two coats (1st yellow & 2nd red) of 1:3 diluted sealer will be required. A 20-litre bottle of sealer should be mixed with 60 litres of water (3 litres of water for every 1 litre of sealer). Whilst diluting the product at 1:3 increases the amount of sealer from 20 litres to 80 litres, the semi-porous subfloor requires approximately four times more sealer and the average coverage rate will remain at 500m².
Low porosity concrete
For applications on a low porosity subfloor, two coats (1st coat yellow & 2nd coat red) of 1:2 diluted sealer will be required. A 20-litre bottle of sealer should be mixed with 40 litres of water (2 litres of water for every 1 litre of sealer). Whilst diluting the product at 1:2 increases the amount of sealer from 20 litres to 60 litres, the semi-porous subfloor requires approximately three times more sealer and the average coverage rate will remain at 500m².
Non-porous concrete
For applications on a non-porous subfloor, two coats (1st coat yellow & 2nd coat red) of 1:1 diluted sealer will be required. A 20-litre bottle of sealer should be mixed with 20 litres of water (1 litre of water for every 1 litre of sealer). Diluting the product at 1:1 increases the amount of sealer from 20 litres to 40 litres, the non-porous subfloor will not require additional sealer and as such the average coverage rate will increase to 1,000m².
Cure Time
The time taken to achieve full cure can be reduced in cold temperatures (<10°C) and dry air or increased in warm temperatures (>30°C) and humid air.
These varied conditions will not affect the initial rate of cure (front-end cure), and the coating will remain in a workable state for approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
The graph shows the cure profile of StarFix SEALER tested according to ASTM D5895 (BK Drying recorder test).

Coverage Rates
The coverage rate of StarFix SEALER is dependent on the porosity of the subfloor and the ratio of dilution. In normal conditions with a single coat of undiluted sealer, a 20 Ltr bottle should be sufficient for 450m². Using a two-coat application with 1:1 dilution on a non-porous subfloor, a 20 Ltr bottle should be sufficient for 1000m². In all other instances a 20 Ltr bottle should be sufficient for 500m². It should be noted than on average, a second coat (red) will require 25% less sealer than the first (yellow) coat.
Product Storage
Good standards of industrial hygiene should be observed when handling this product. Protective gloves should be worn when handling the containers. The recommendations made in the Health and Safety data sheet for this product should always be observed.
