Safe and Effective Management of Adhesive Spills

Accidents can happen on any construction site, but with the correct procedures, adhesive spillages can be managed quickly, safely and with minimal disruption.

The method used to deal with a spill will depend on the size of the spillage, the surface involved and whether the adhesive can be removed while still liquid or after it has cured.​

Cleaning Spills with StarFix SOL-ZERO

For the removal of both cured and uncured StarFix pedestal adhesives, we recommend the use of StarFix SOL-ZERO.

​

Unlike traditional cleaning solvents, StarFix SOL-ZERO is a completely hazard-free cleaning solvent specifically developed for use with StarFix polyurethane adhesives. It contains no hazardous solvents, produces no unpleasant odours and provides a safer alternative for installers working in occupied buildings and enclosed spaces.

​

StarFix SOL-ZERO works by gradually breaking down adhesive, allowing it to be removed without aggressive scraping or harsh solvent cleaners.

​

To remove uncured, adhesive residue:

​

• Pour directly onto the area after removing the liquid adhesive, ensuring the affected area is fully covered.

​

• Leave to soak for 15 minutes before using rags to remove the solvent and adhesive residue.

​

To remove cured adhesive:

​

• Pour directly onto the spilt adhesive, ensuring the affected area is fully covered.

​

• Soak a clean absorbent cloth or rag with StarFix SOL-ZERO and place it over the spillage. This is often the preferred method as it keeps the solvent in contact with the adhesive for an extended period, allowing it to penetrate and soften the material more effectively.

How Long Does It Take?

The time required depends on the size and thickness of the adhesive spill.

​

As a general guide:

​

• Small spillages will typically soften after approximately 2 hours.

​

• Larger or thicker deposits may require 12 to 24 hours of soaking before the adhesive can be removed easily.

Once softened, the adhesive can normally be lifted away using a plastic scraper or suitable non-damaging tool before wiping the surface clean.

Handling Larger Liquid Spillages

Where a larger quantity of liquid adhesive has been spilled, it should first be recovered wherever possible before any cleaning takes place.

Using the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE):

​

1. Scrape the liquid adhesive from the surface using suitable tools.

2. Transfer the recovered material into a sound, non-leaking container.

3. Seal or store the container safely until the adhesive has fully cured.

Once fully cured, the material becomes inert and can normally be disposed of as general building waste in accordance with local regulations.

If the recovered adhesive cannot be allowed to cure before disposal, it should be treated and disposed of as hazardous waste in accordance with applicable waste management legislation.
