Product Description

Aspartech BASE is a three-component, high-performance, self-levelling base coat formulated using advanced polyurea technology. It has been specifically developed to improve, level and condition concrete substrates prior to the application of compatible Aspartech flooring systems.

Aspartech BASE provides a smooth, uniform and consistent surface over concrete that may be uneven, rough, porous or otherwise unsuitable for the direct application of a finished Aspartech coating.

The use of Aspartech BASE is not required on every installation. Where concrete is sound, suitably level and correctly prepared, the specified Aspartech coating system may be applied without BASE were permitted by that system. However, where there is any doubt regarding the quality, uniformity or suitability of the concrete substrate, Aspartech BASE provides an additional preparatory layer that helps create a more consistent surface for the subsequent coating system.

Aspartech BASE is cold curing, moisture tolerant and helps compensate for minor surface irregularities and variations in the substrate, creating a high-quality base onto which Aspartech FLOORCOAT, CLEANZONE and CLEARCOAT can be applied

Technical Performance

Industrial floor coatings are expected to do far more than simply provide an attractive finish. They must withstand heavy traffic, resist wear, bond securely to the substrate and continue performing in demanding environments for many years. Aspartech BASE has been tested against recognised British, European and ASTM standards to demonstrate its outstanding mechanical, chemical and environmental performance.

Chemical Resistance

Industrial and commercial concrete floors can be exposed to a wide range of chemicals during normal use, including cleaning products, oils, fuels and aggressive industrial substances. Where a base coat forms part of a resin flooring system, it is important that it maintains its integrity when exposed to these contaminants and provides a stable foundation for the subsequent flooring layers.

Aspartech BASE has been formulated to provide excellent resistance to many of the chemicals commonly encountered in industrial and commercial environments. This helps ensure that the base coat remains durable and maintains its performance as an integral part of the complete Aspartech flooring system.

The table below summarises the performance of Aspartech BASE following 1-hour and 24-hour exposure to a range of commonly encountered chemicals.

Application Instructions

Proper mixing is critical to the successful application of Aspartech BASE. The system is supplied as three pre-weighed components containing the correct proportions required for a complete kit:


Part A: 14.200 kg – 71%
Part B: 2.700 kg – 14%
Part C: 3.100 kg – 15%
Total kit: 20.000 kg

Part A is supplied in the main mixing container, with Parts B and C supplied separately.
 

Before mixing, plan the installation area and, where appropriate, divide the floor into predetermined application sections. This helps ensure the mixed material is distributed at a consistent application rate and thickness.


❶ Ensure the correct Parts A, B and C are available and that all containers are sealed and undamaged. Establish a clean mixing area protected against accidental spills. Avoid storing or mixing the product in direct sunlight, as elevated material temperatures can significantly reduce working time.


❷ Remove the lid from Part A and mix for approximately 60 seconds using a low-speed drill mixer fitted with a helix mixing paddle. Move the mixer around the container to ensure any settled pigments, fillers or additives are fully reincorporated.


❸ Carefully add the complete contents of Part B to the pre-mixed Part A.


❹ Add the complete contents of Part C to Parts A and B.


❺ Mix all three components thoroughly for approximately 60 seconds, moving the mixer around the sides and bottom of the container to achieve a completely homogeneous mixture. At temperatures below approximately 10°C, the increased viscosity may require mixing for up to 90 seconds.


Avoid excessive mixing speeds, which can cause splashing and introduce unnecessary air into the material.


Important – Do Not Leave Mixed Material in the Container

Once Parts A, B and C have been combined, the curing reaction begins. Material retained in bulk within the mixing container can generate heat through an exothermic reaction, significantly accelerating the cure.


Immediately after mixing, pour the complete contents of the container onto the prepared floor.

❻ Immediately after mixing, pour Aspartech BASE onto the prepared concrete substrate in a controlled ribbon or series of pours across the predetermined application area.

❼ Spread the material evenly across the surface using a suitable serrated/notched squeegee, gauge rake or other appropriate application tool to achieve the specified coverage rate and a consistent film thickness.

The self-levelling characteristics of Aspartech BASE will allow the material to flow and settle, helping to produce a smooth and uniform surface. A suitable roller or spiked roller may be used where necessary to assist levelling and release entrapped air.


Maintain a wet edge between adjacent application sections and avoid excessive reworking once the material has begun to cure. Aspartech BASE should be applied as a continuous base coat. It should not be used to fill deep holes, significant depressions, structural cracks or other substantial defects. These should be repaired and allowed to cure before application of BASE.


Allow the BASE layer to cure for the specified period before applying the subsequent Aspartech coating. The surface should remain clean, dry and protected from contamination, water and mechanical damage during the curing period.


Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with Aspartech ECO-SOL before the material cures. Once cured, Aspartech BASE can only be removed mechanically.

Cure Time

Aspartech BASE has been formulated for application within the UK's temperate climate and can be applied at temperatures between 0°C and 25°C, with an ideal application temperature of approximately 10°C to 20°C.

Fast Return to Service

This rapid cure profile makes Aspartech BASE particularly well suited to base coat appllications where downtime must be kept to an absolute minimum.

Under normal application temperatures of 10°C to 20°C, Aspartech LEVEL-FIX can typically be:

 

Tack-Free in approximately 2 hours
Overcoat in approximately 3 hours
Fully Cured in approximately 8 hours

These figures should be treated as typical values because actual curing times will depend upon material, substrate and ambient temperatures. Higher temperatures will generally accelerate the curing reaction and reduce working time, while lower temperatures will increase viscosity and extend curing and overcoating times.

Ambient Temperature

The ideal ambient temperature for application is between approximately 10°C and 20°C. At temperatures approaching the minimum application temperature of 0°C, cure and overcoating times can be significantly extended.

Surface Temperature

Surface temperature can differ considerably from ambient air temperature, particularly where the floor is exposed to direct sunlight or other heat sources. Substrate temperature should therefore be checked before application.

Application to excessively hot substrates should be avoided, as elevated temperatures can dramatically reduce working time and may adversely affect the appearance and performance of the finished base coat.
 

Coverage Rate

Because Aspartech BASE is a levelling base coat, coverage should be specified according to the area being coated and the required application thickness which in most instances will be an average of 2mm.

A complete 20 kg kit has an approximate mixed volume of 13.12 litres, equivalent to approximately 0.656 litres per kg.

The theoretical coverage can therefore be calculated using:


Coverage (m²) = Mixed Volume (litres) ÷ Application Thickness (mm)

These are theoretical coverage rates based upon the stated mixed volume. Actual consumption will vary depending upon the profile, porosity, condition and evenness of the concrete substrate, together with application technique and normal material wastage.

Where Aspartech BASE is being used to improve an irregular concrete substrate, material consumption may be higher because additional material will naturally accumulate within lower areas of the floor.

Product Storage

Aspartech BASE contains isocyanates and the advice contained in the products Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is of particular importance.

Good standards of industrial hygiene should be observed when handling this product. Protective gloves and goggles should be worn when handling the containers. The recommendations made in the Health and Safety data sheet for this product should always be observed.
