Installation - Aftercare

A StarScape ULTRA resin bound surface is designed to be used by pedestrians and by light vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes gross weight (Classes A to C1). The use of a StarScape PRO resin bonded surface should be considered for applications that may receive vehicular traffic in excess of 7.5 tonnes gross weight (Class C1+). A StarScape ULTRA surface is not intended for use by skips, vehicle jacks or industrial and farming equipment.

Cleaning

A StarScape ULTRA surface should be cleaned regularly in order to maintain its attractive appearance and durability. To clean the surface, it should be swept with a soft bristle broom and soapy water. To remove more stubborn dirt, it may be necessary to use cleaning products however the use of abrasive pads and wire brushes should be avoided. Before using a cleaning product, a small, discrete test patch should be chosen for a trial before general use. Cleaning products should be biodegradable and flushed with clean water to reduce the risk of staining the resin.

If a broom and cleaning product is insufficient to remove dirt then a cold-water power wash can be used. To power wash the surface, use only sufficient water pressure to remove dirt or contamination. Use cold water only with a fan jet, maintaining at least 300mm between the lance and the surface holding the lance at an approximately angle of 45⁰. Avoid concentration of the jet on one area by using a side-to-side sweeping motion.

To remove moss or algae use a stiff brush and fungicide to remove any biological growth. Flushing with clean water may not be necessary and may affect the long-term effectiveness of the treatment. It is important to follow local regulations with regard to the use of chemicals. Periodic use of a fungicide should be considered as a preventative measure in areas where conditions are likely to promote biological growth. If the use of a degreaser or acid-based cleaning product is required to remove chewing gum, tyre marks or oil stains then a small, discrete test patch should be chosen for a trial before general use.

Repairs

Small, localised repairs can be achieved using the same approved aggregate blend as used during the installation. Repairs should be carried out as soon as possible after they have been identified to avoid further degradation. It should be noted that repairs are unlikely to be invisible and may initially appear as a lighter colour until the repair has had sufficient time to age. Consideration should be given to incorporating a design element as part of the repair.

Restore

Over time and use the surface may lose some of its initial gloss/wet appearance. Many users prefer the more natural look that this presents however the use of StarScape RESTORE can bring back the original gloss effect and also significantly strengthen the surface. Any restoration should be completed using StarScape RESTORE only. The viscosity of the resin used in bound surfacing will significantly reduce the porosity of the surface whilst diluting resin with aggressive solvents such as ‘Xylene’ will attack the bound surface matrix and only serve to reduce the overall tensile strength. StarScape RESTORE is has been developed specifically for its purpose and using very different chemistry to the bound surface itself.
